A holy space receives the music and multiplies its power to create shared feelings. It allows people to feel in harmony together, in peace. Anima Mundi is the witness of the fertility of this relationship.
The Cathedral, the Monumental Cemetery, the places where our festival has been held for eleven years now offer a privileged condition that pervades the spirit and the sensitivity of those who play and those who listen, making the players and the audience part of one and the same community. Such a special empathy between architecture and sound instantly excited and attracted Sir John Eliot Gardiner, who has been the art director of the Festival since 2006.
The seven concerts scheduled this year, from September 17th to October 11th, will give prominence to such a special relationship one more time. The music played by the British conductor and the groups he has founded – English Baroque Soloists, Monteverdi Choir and Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique – ranges from Heinrich Ignaz Biber, a great violinist and composer of the late 17th century, to Bach, Brahms, Bruckner, Stravinskij. Four centuries of music, five different ways of looking at the same horizon, at the same Mystery, the one that divides and unites life to death. As much in Mozart’s Requiem, which will be opening the festival on September 17th, as in Bach’s Mass in B minor, performed on October 4th. Christopher Hogwood and Sigiswald Kuijken are the two conductors who have invested the energies, the passion of a lifetime into these authors.
