Come and discover Pisa with us on a walking tour through the city centre every Monday (English & Italian), Friday (German & Italian) and Saturday (English & Italian) from July 20th to November 14^th

The tour starts from Piazza XX settembre (City Hall arcades) at 10.15 am. The itinerary includes the following:

LUNGARNI (Riverside) the fundamental role of the Arno river throughout the history of the city

BORGO STRETTO and PIAZZA DELLE VETTOVAGLIE the historical economic ‘heart’ of Pisa, still nowadays main city shopping area: markets, towerhouses, shops. The Pisan historical place for exchanging and people interaction since the Middle Age

S. FRANCESCO QUARTER where Galileo Galilei was born, one of the most characteristic neighborhood of Pisa. Here stands the church founded by St. Francis of Assisi where some of the saint’s relics are kept

PIAZZA DEI CAVALIERI the strategic importance of the city during the Tuscan Grand Duchy and the Florentine government is testified in this square.

PIAZZA DEI MIRACOLI (Field of Miracles) here stand the outstanding symbols of the Maritime Republic greatness: the Baptistery, the Cathedral, the Medieval Cemetery and the world famous Leaning Tower

La cucina pisana offre sia specilità di mare che di terra ed anche qualche ricetta particolare come ad esempio la “minestra di fagioli bianchi di San Michele” , le “bavettine sul pesce” (speciali spaghetti schiacciati conditi con sugo di pesce), la “zuppa di arselle” servita sopra fette di pane toscano, la “zuppa di ranocchi” . Altro piatto tipico sono le “cèe alla pisana” anguille neonate della foce dell'Arno cucinate con salvia. I secondi piatti vedono spesso l'uso della selvaggina tra cui: fagiani, folaghe, cinghiale, conigli e anitre. Tra i dolci vi segnaliamo la famosa “torta coi bischeri” a base di pinoli, ciocolata, uvetta e cedro candito. Tra i vini ci sono il Chianti delle Colline Pisane, il Montescudaio ed il Montecarlo.

Parco Regionale di Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli was established in 1979. It covers over 24,000 hectares situated along the coast from Viareggio and Livorno. Although it lies in the middle of a strongly urbanized area, this territory has maintained considerable natural features, and here it is possible to find one of the rare examples of non-building coastal area.

Music entered the Scuola Normale almost forty years ago, when the presence of music in universities was practically unheard of.

Gilberto Bernardini, then President of the Normale, considered music an integral part of scientific and humanistic culture and intellectual enrichment and thought that as such it should also be part of the Scuola Normale.

Thanks to the synergy between Bernardini and the Maestro Pietro Farulli – who wanted to open the university to musical culture – in 1967 the Concerts of the Normale were inaugurated by the Quartetto Italiano, an ensemble which has left a profound mark on the history of musical interpretation.

From 1967 to today – under the management first of Piero Farulli, then of Andrea Mascagni (1987-1993), and lastly of Carlo de Incontrera – the concert season has become a tradition at Scuola Normale. This tradition includes a choir, the Coro Vincenzo Galilei, introduced by Farulli as well some 30 years ago as an integral part of his musical program.

These forty years of activity have always been characterized by both tradition and innovation: On one hand there has always been space reserved for music from Medieval to Renaissance, up to the Baroque, and on the other hand attention has always been given to modern and contemporary productions.

Another important element has been the importance which has been given from the beginning to young musical talent. Initially the concerts included a young string quartet from the Music School of Fiesole, subsequently every season has included concerts by students from the Music Academy of Imola.

The variety of the repertoire of every season and their organization have always privileged the formation of the students and all the public towards good taste and sensitivity towards music.

The Concerts of the Normale provide a season of varying musical periods and styles, of instrumental interpretation and shifting composition genres – even by the same composer – which help participants better assess and understand the innovative and experimental expression of contemporary music.
